Log Home Sandblasting & Sanding

Surface Preparation for Long-Lasting ProtectionAt True North Log Works, proper preparation is the foundation of a successful restoration. Whether through crushed-glass media blasting or professional sanding, our goal is always the same:prepare your logs so the stain penetrates deeply, adheres properly, and provides long-term protection.

What Is Crushed-Glass Blasting?

Crushed-glass blasting (often called log home sandblasting) is the process of propelling ultra-fine 50/100 grit recycled glass, made from recycled wine bottles, using high-volume compressed air.
This blasting media is:

  • as fine as table salt

  • 100% silica-free

  • non-toxic & environmentally friendly

  • naturally biodegradable

  • safe for surrounding landscaping

Glass blasting gently profiles the surface of the logs, opening the pores of the wood so stain can penetrate deep into the cellular structure. This results in:

  • better stain absorption

  • longer-lasting UV protection

  • improved moisture resistance

  • a more consistent finish

“Sandblasting” and “glass blasting” are interchangeable terms.
We exclusively use crushed glass because it is cleaner, safer, and superior to traditional sand.

Does Blasting Damage Logs or Chinking?

No. When performed correctly with the proper equipment, crushed-glass blasting does not damage the logs.
It removes old coatings and weathered wood gently, leaving the surface clean and textured for optimal staining.
Chinking / Caulking
If properly installed, chinking and caulking will not be damaged by glass blasting.
We mask sensitive areas when needed, but most high-quality chinking systems tolerate blasting extremely well.

Blasting vs. Sanding: What’s the Difference?
Both blasting and sanding prepare the wood for staining.
The best choice depends on the condition of the home, the previous coating, and the desired finish.
Below is a balanced, professional comparison for tnlogworks.ca:
Crushed-Glass Media Blasting (Recommended for Most Restorations)
Blasting is ideal for removing:

  • old and failing stains

  • UV-damaged grey wood

  • deep weathering

  • mould or surface contaminants

  • uneven coatings

Advantages

  • Opens the pores of the wood for deep stain penetration

  • Provides long-lasting, non-film forming protection

  • Fast and efficient for large projects

  • Reaches corners, grooves, log ends, and uneven surfaces

  • No chemicals required

  • Environmentally friendly

Result
A textured, clean, “fresh-cut” surface ready for stain to bond deeply and evenly.
Professional Sanding / Grinding (Still an Excellent Option)
Sanding can be the right choice for:

  • interior log surfaces

  • spot repairs

  • small refinishing projects

  • smoothing rough areas after blasting

  • homes previously sanded that need matching texture

  • surfaces where a smoother aesthetic is preferred

Advantages

  • Produces a smooth, refined finish

  • Excellent for interiors and small exterior sections

  • Useful for detail work, trim, rails, and beams

  • Works well when paired with blasting for a hybrid approach

Why True North Log Works Uses Both Methods
Many companies choose only one method, but we use blasting, sanding, or a combination, depending on:

  • the wood species

  • previous coatings

  • the desired appearance

  • the age and condition of the home

  • your long-term maintenance goals

Why We Prefer Sanding for Most Exterior ProjectsAt True North Log Works, both crushed-glass blasting and sanding are effective preparation methods for restoring log and timber homes. While media blasting is a powerful option, we often prefer professional sanding for many exterior projects because it allows us to deliver a smoother, more controlled, and visually refined finish.Sanding provides a high level of precision and surface uniformity that isespecially valuable when working on homes where aesthetics and fine detail matter.

Our Approach: Sanding + Optional Hybrid Preparation

While sanding is our preferred method for many exterior projects, we also use a hybrid approach when needed:
Sanding + Light Blasting = best of both worlds
This approach is ideal when a home requires:

  • deep removal in certain areas

  • smoothing in others

  • blending after log replacement

  • detail refinement around corners and joinery

This flexibility allows us to choose the method that delivers the best possible finish for your specific home.
